Fleming Island NJROTC -Teams-

Academic Team

Our Academic Team competes with other units through academic postals, which are tests cadets may take that are then mailed in to be scored and ranked by highest score.  The team also travels to an assortment of schools in Clay County to compete with other NJROTC programs in "Brain Brawls." In these competitions, competitors may be asked anything ranging from Naval Science to popular culture or science, and the competitors can answer those questions through the use of buzzers, much like a game show. The first cadet to answer the question gets the points, and the team with the most points wins the competition.

The Academic Team practices every Wednesday from 6:30 AM to 7:10 AM. Academic Team is led by the Academic Team Commander Cadet Ellis coached by the  Senior Naval Science Instructor, CWO4 Keller.

Athletic Team

The Athletic Team's activities consist of push-ups, sit-ups and running during Drill meets. The team pushes cadets to become more physically fit by practicing these exercises and participation in various team sporting events.

Drill Team

Drill Teams meet after school and are coached by Master Chief Barlow and the team commanders. The teams are: Unarmed Basic, Armed Basic, Unarmed Exhibition, Armed Exhibition, Color Guard, and Personnel Inspection. The Drill Teams teach discipline, respect, and commitment.

Orienteering Team

The Orienteering Team is commanded by Cadet Villalta and is managed and overseen by the SNSI. Practices will soon be held on Friday afternoons. Practice for team members is held after school and includes running long distances and using compasses for navigation, as well as other skills learned in the classroom, which teaches land navigation, mapping skills, and self discipline.  In addition, the Orienteering team will compete in several competitions and orienteering meets during the year.

Air Rifle Team

Our Air Rifle Team practices every Tuesday and Thursday from 1445-1630 and includes shooting at targets (about six cadets at a time) at targets ten meters away. Our team uses air rifles with no pump and they fire low caliber pellets. Recently, we have refurbished our rifle range and we have brand new targets with metal backstops to catch pellets. Our team submits targets to be scored and competed with other schools and units, nationally. In addition, for the first time Rifle Team will be competing in shoulder-to-shoulder (STS) competitions where shooters will fire their targets live with other shooters instead of just sending them in. In order to join Rifle Team, each cadet has to signed parental permission, attend the required safety brief and score a 100% on a safety test. They must do this or they will not be allowed to shoot. Rifle Team is commanded by Cadet Buck and coached by our Senior Naval Science Instructor, CWO4 Keller, USN (Ret.)

Drone Team

This is the inaugural season for our Drone team.  We are in the building stages and once fully up and running, this team will travel and compete in Area-12 Drone completions.  These competitions will consist of four member teams completing obstacle courses, reconnaissance flights as well as timed relay races while operating the drone
